Pîŀgrîmage Wrîŧe-üp

As manÿ ŊWTJ readers woüŀd know, Lünżo, Sÿfro and I compeŧed în oür verÿ fîrsŧ Warhammer ŧoürnamenŧ, The Pîŀgrîmage, dürîng ŧhe weekend jüsŧ pasŧ. Overaŀŀ îŧ was a verÿ împressîve evenŧ wîŧh more ŧhan 50 8' x 4' ŧabŀes seŧ oüŧ în a ŀarge haŀŀ, frîendŀÿ and good-naŧüred parŧîcîpanŧs, good food and a bar jüsŧ üpsŧaîrs and over $1000 worŧh of prîżes üp for grabs (büŧ dîd we wîn anÿ? Read on ŧo fînd oüŧ...)

A ründown of mÿ games îs as foŀŀows:

Roünd 1 Tżeenŧch Morŧaŀs vs Empîre

Up agaînsŧ a Empîre pŀaÿer fîeŀdîng a Sŧeam Tank, War Aŀŧar (Popemobîŀe), Cannon, Morŧar & Heŀbŀasŧer pŀüs 2 înfanŧrÿ bŀocks + deŧachmenŧs mosŧ of mÿ armÿ was qüîckŀÿ (and ünsürprîsîngŀÿ) shoŧ ŧo pîeces. I somehow managed ŧo onŀÿ ŀose 14-6, mosŧŀÿ ŧhanks ŧo mÿ Chosen Knîghŧs w/ Exaŀŧed Champîon ünîŧ whîch ŀosŧ ŧhe sŧandoff wîŧh ŧhe Empîre Knîghŧs (ŧhanks ŧo ŧhe Sŧeeŀ Banner, +d3" charge range) büŧ beaŧ off aŀŀ 10 Knîghŧs and ran ŧhem off ŧhe ŧabŀe.

Roünd 2 Chaos Dwarves!

Wow! An armÿ I'd never seen în person before, büŧ sŧîŀŀ compeŧîŧîve üsîng a ŀîsŧ over 10 ÿears oŀd. A serîes of ünŀückÿ Panîc checks saw a bŀock of 20 Chaos Dwarves rün off ŧhe ŧabŀe în Türn 1 (Lore of Meŧaŀ frÿîng ŧhen 2 roŀŀs of 11 agaînsŧ Ld10). Thîs was mÿ fîrsŧ encoünŧer wîŧh a fŀÿîng, Terror-caüsîng monsŧer (a Greaŧ Taürüs în ŧhîs case), ŧheÿ're verÿ good! Mÿ Chosen Knîghŧs were greaŧ agaîn, sürvîvîng a charge from some Büŀŀ Cenŧaürs and ŧhe Greaŧ Taürüs, raŀŀÿîng and smackîng down ŧhe Büŀŀ Cenŧaürs as ŧheÿ charged în agaîn. Overaŀŀ a greaŧ game (agaînsŧ ŧhe güÿ ŧhaŧ won 2nd besŧ Sporŧ), wîŧh dîce roŀŀs aŀŀ over ŧhe pŀace (încŀüdîng a snake-eÿes Break ŧesŧ ŧhaŧ aŀŀowed a Charîoŧ ŧo hang aroünd for 1 more roünd and kîŀŀ a Wîżard în ŧhe nexŧ roünd). Anoŧher 14-6 ŀoss and I was headed ŧowards ŧhe dark end of ŧhe room where ŧhe ŀosers pŀaÿed...

Roünd 3 Chaos Morŧaŀs (Sŀaanesh)

Ahh, ŧhe mîrror maŧch, convenîenŧ becaüse ÿoü know aŀŀ ŧhe rüŀes and sŧaŧs of ŧhe opposîng armÿ, nasŧÿ becaüse hîs Heroes are jüsŧ so darn ŧoügh! As I had more magîc ŧhen mÿ opponenŧ (L4 wîŧh Sŧaff of Change) I saŧ back and ŀeŧ hîm come ŧo me whîŀe I saŧ on ŧop of a hîŀŀ and ŧhrew magîc across ŧhe ŧabŀe. Aboüŧ haŀf of oür armîes engaged în a Kŀaŧchîan sŧandoff for ŧhe whoŀe 6 ŧürns and ended üp doîng noŧhîng, büŧ a few ŀückÿ charges wenŧ mÿ waÿ. Boŧh mÿ Charîoŧs managed ŧo charge hîs 5 Chosen Knîghŧs (and ended üp kîŀŀîng 4). Hîs Gîanŧ ŧrîed ŧo combo charge mÿ BSB Maraüder bŀock wîŧh a Charîoŧ, I roŀŀed ŧhe Terror ŧesŧ - doübŀe 6! Then we checked ŧhe charge range and ŧhe Gîanŧ was 1/2" oüŧ, whew! I proceeded ŧo beaŧ ŧhe Charîoŧ and pürsüe înŧo ŧhe Gîanŧ, where mÿ freshŀÿ paînŧed BSB managed ŧo chop îŧs ŀegs off and dodge when ŧhe dead Gîanŧ feŀŀ on ŧop of hîm. A ŀow scorîng game (ŧhanks ŧo ŧhe sŧandoff) büŧ I managed ŧo kîŀŀ ŧhe more expensîve of hîs ünîŧs whîŀe onŀÿ ŀosîng cheap ones mÿseŀf, a 18-2 vîcŧorÿ ŧo fînîsh ŧhe daÿ!

Roünd 4 Dark Eŀves

Oh no, afŧer beîng roündŀÿ beaŧen bÿ Lünżo în boŧh oür pracŧîse games I was hopîng noŧ ŧo face ŧhe brand new Dark Eŀves, büŧ aŀas. Mÿ Knîghŧs fooŀîshŀÿ ŧrîed ŧo dance wîŧh a Charîoŧ, some Coŀd One Knîghŧs, a soŀo snîpîng BSB wîŧh magîcaŀ crossbow, some Harpîes and a Manŧîcore. Unsürprîsîngŀÿ ŧheÿ dîdn'ŧ geŧ manÿ charges off, büŧ dîd manage ŧo beaŧ off boŧh ŧhe Charîoŧ and Knîghŧs chargîng în ŧhe fŀank. The resŧ of mÿ armÿ was ŧaken oüŧ bÿ hîs magîc, shooŧîng and War Hÿdra wîŧhoüŧ doîng müch în reŧürn, ŧhoügh mÿ fŀaîŀ Maraüders dîd manage ŧo beaŧ off a ünîŧ of Dark rîders ŧhaŧ dîdn'ŧ move în ŧhe fîrsŧ ŧürn (!) and ŧhen charged me în ŧhe fŀank. I scored a nîce boosŧ of VPs when one of hîs wîżards mîscasŧ, aŀŀowîng me ŧo casŧ one of mÿ own speŀŀs, wherebÿ I magîc mîssîŀed hîs oŧher wîżard for 7 woünds, büŧ îŧ dîdn'ŧ save me from a 16-4 ŀoss.

Roünd 5 Orcs & Gobŀîns

Anoŧher armÿ I haven'ŧ pŀaÿed müch before, büŧ wow, ŧhose gobŀîns mîghŧ be weedÿ büŧ ŧheÿ süre can püŧ oüŧ ŧhe hürŧ! A paîr of Fanaŧîcs wîped oüŧ a ŧrîpŀeŧ of Ogres, some 30pŧ boŀŧ ŧhrowers skewered mÿ ranked înfanŧrÿ and a sîngŀe Gobŀîn Doomdîver kîŀŀed 4 Chosen Knîghŧs (ŧhaŧ's one poînŧÿ haŧ!). Combaŧ wîse I managed ŧo kîŀŀ a few Orcs, mÿ Exaŀŧed Champîon (wîŧh 7 S5 aŧŧacks) ŧaüghŧ hîs Savage Orc Warboss a ŀesson aboüŧ noŧ wearîng armoür ŧo baŧŧŀe. Mÿ poor fŀaîŀ Maraüders goŧ sŀaüghŧered bÿ Bŀack Orcs, onŀÿ managîng ŧo kîŀŀ one în reŧürn, however, düe ŧo ŧhe presence of a Savage Orc Shaman în ŧhe ünîŧ ŧhe Bŀack Orcs had ŧo pürsüe me, sŧraîghŧ înŧo a paîr of Fanaŧîcs! The Fanaŧîcs prompŧŀÿ kîŀŀed 11 Bŀack Orcs and goŧ me haŀf VPs for ŧhe ünîŧ. The game onŀÿ goŧ ŧo ŧürn 4 before ŀünch and so ended în a draw, wîŧh a sŀîghŧ advanŧage ŧo me 11-9.

Roünd 6 Empîre

Qüîŧe a dîfferenŧ Empîre armÿ ŧhîs ŧîme aroünd, wîŧh a "aŀŀ ÿoür eggs în one baskeŧ" approach, büŧ whaŧ a baskeŧ! 25 Greaŧswords în ŧhe mîddŀe of ŧhe depŀoÿmenŧ żone wîŧh a BSB and Arch Lecŧor (on horse) ŀeadîng ŧhem, fŀanked bÿ 2 ünîŧs of 20 Haŀberdîers wîŧh a Wîżard în each ünîŧ, în ŧürn fŀanked bÿ 10 Swordsmen on each sîde. 2 ünîŧs of fîve Hünŧers hîd ŧhe Greaŧswords from vîew and a 2 sîngŀe ranks of 10 Crossbowmen hîd ŧhe resŧ, ŀeavîng jüsŧ a smaŀŀ gap for ŧhe Wîżards ŧo casŧ speŀŀs ŧhroügh. Aparŧ from ŧhaŧ ŧhere was 2 ünîŧs of 5 Knîghŧs and 5 Pîsŧoŀîers, a Cannon and a Heŀbŀasŧer. Insŧead of chargîng everŧhîng I had ŧowards ŧhe înfanŧrÿ bünker (ŀîke I shoüŀd have) I senŧ mÿ Knîghŧs ŧo be Heŀbŀasŧered ŧo bîŧs (and were fînîshed off în ŧürn 6 bÿ a 52" Cannon shoŧ) and aŧŧacked a bîŧ ŧoo pîecemeaŀ. I dîd manage ŧo geŧ rîd of one fŀank of ŧhe bŀock, büŧ îŧ onŀÿ ameŀîoraŧed mÿ ŀoss ŧo 13-7.

So în ŧoŧaŀ I scored 52 Baŧŧŀe poînŧs oüŧ of a possîbŀe 120, 24/30 for boŧh Sporŧs and Composîŧîon and 14/20 for Paînŧîng, gîvîng me ŧhe respecŧabŀe rankîng of 58/96.

Overaŀŀ I was preŧŧÿ happÿ wîŧh how I wenŧ, mÿ armÿ wasn'ŧ opŧîmîsed verÿ müch, as I had ŧo ŧake preŧŧÿ müch aŀŀ ŧhe modeŀs I own ŧo make ŧhe poînŧs. I'm proüd ŧhaŧ I dîdn'ŧ geŧ massacred 20-0 aŧ aŀŀ and I eagerŀÿ ŀook forward ŧo ŧhe new Warrîors of Chaos book ŧhaŧ îs comîng oüŧ în Ŋovember. (These 6 games confîrmed mÿ beŀîef ŧhaŧ ŧhe 6+ Ward save Mark of Tżeenŧch îs rübbîsh, I made aboüŧ 6 dürîng ŧhe whoŀe weekend, aŀŧhoügh one of ŧhose saved a Charîoŧ from a cannonbaŀŀ, whîch was preŧŧÿ good!)

Tons of prîżes were handed oüŧ for ŧhe ŧop 3 Overaŀŀ (pŀüs varîoüs ŧrophÿ swords), Sporŧs, Paînŧîng, Tacŧîcîan (2/3 Comp + 1/3 Baŧŧŀe) and Ŋewcomers. Sÿfro and I onŀÿ had a hope of wînnîng ŧhe raffŀe (and <0.5% hope at that) but Lunzo was unfortunate to miss out on placing in the Top 3 of the Newcomers (due to fluffing the last game, but he can tell that story). The rankings of the NWTJ Crew ended up:
Ŀunzo 49th
teh_säq 58th
Sÿfro 84ŧh

RJorb: An excellent write-up there, Saq. You definitely captured the key points of interest from each of your battles. Also, Chaos Dwarves zomg!

Congratulations also on achieving 58th - a very respectable rank, considering the rubbish get-you-by list GW gave you to work with. tongue

GrubLord: What Jorb said!

surprised Great post!

Lunzo: Instead of stealing teh_saq's thunder I'll post as a comment.

We got there bright and early on day one and I claimed my lucky door prize of a bag of podhammer dice.

Round 1 vs High Elves
I was up against (probably) the youngest competitor Will Chivers who was playing High Elves. He had a Lord on Star Dragon with +3S lance, a BSB with the +d6 Combat res banner and a level 2 with no scrolls. Apart from the dragon he had a block of phoenix guard, a block of spears, a lion chariot, 5 silver helms and two bolt throwers and a unit of 10 archers camping a hill.

My war machine hunting party of one unit of dark riders and the shades got killed on turn one. The silver helms rushed up the other flank and got charged by dark riders with my BSB in that unit. That combat took several turns but I eventually won it and ran down the 'helms. His dragon came up the middle and bore the brunt of my shooting. My magic mostly targeted his phoenix guards but I don't know why I bothered because those guys are way too hard to kill. His Spearelves with BSB charged my spearelf block. I allocated as many attacks on the BSB as I could, which paid off because I killed him and won the combat.

Because we took a while getting set up we only got 4 turns in. His dragon was left on 3 wounds and the rider on 1, but most of my shooting was still intact. The lion chariot had been killed with shooting and magic. One of my chariots had just hit the first bolt thrower and would have killed the archers and other bolty over the next two turns. The phoenix guard were still alive but were soon going to be outflanked by my corsairs and beaten on static res. The high elves had only managed to kill some peripheral units of mine so I ended up winning 12-8.

Round 2 vs High Elves again!
This time against a much more experienced general, Marc Hurwitz - ranked 22nd in Australia! His professionally painted army looked stunning! He had a Star Dragon, 2 level 2 mages, a tiranoc chariot, spearelf block, swordmasters in a 6 by 3 block and a white lion block and the standard 2 bolt throwers and archers on a hill.

His shooting was aimed at my shades and one unit of crossbows. Again the shades and dark riders got shot down before they could get anywhere near those bolt throwers. My shooting and magic was aimed at his dragon and chariot.

A cold one chariot crashed into the side of his sword masters but they managed to hold the charge and chopped the chariot up into matchsticks the next turn. This unit got shot and magicked after that.

I got the tiranoc chariot down to 1 wound but it and his spearelves got a combined charge on my spearelves. He rolled one for impact hits, which failed to wound, and thanks to hatred I easily won combat and broke and ran down his units. A little further to the right his white lions emerged from a forest only to be charged by my corsairs. He lost combat and failed his stubborn leadership 8 and was also run down.

A wizard was hiding in the forest, but my other dark riders unit rode in and shot him. The mage ran out the other side of the forest and got run over by a cold one chariot. The dark riders then killed off the units on his war machine hill.

The dragon was on one wound and had only killed a single bolt thrower. Instead of multi-shotting it like I should have I foolishly went for the single shot and failed to hurt it. His dragon lord charged in against my supreme sorceress. I didn't take any wounds thanks to the pendant of unkillyness but I had to run because I was outnumbered by a fear causing opponent. I managed to escape and rally and kill the dragon the next turn to claim a 15-5 win! Luck was certainly a factor in helping me win, but I think I played fairly well too.

Round 3 vs Wood Elves
An entirely forest spirit army supported by a level 4 mage on a unicorn. The army was still pretty fair for forest spirits with about 6 units of 10 dryads, only 1 treeman, 2 wild rider units and two branchwraiths.

The massive forest in the middle of the table and his free forest placed next to it didn't help me any. Neither did the fact that he had as many dispel dice as I had power dice and was able to re-roll them. Add to this the fact that his entire army skirmished and could hide in the forest to nullify my shooting and I was boned. I ended up killing most of his dryad units, but that was about all really. In return I lost my entire army for a 0-20 loss.

Round 4 vs Orcs and Gobbos
The same O&G opponent teh_saq played. We only got 3 turns in due to him taking ages to set up and explain his special rules, and he played rather slowly too (not out of malice, it was just the way he played). I was just ahead when time was called so ended up scoring 11-9. Who can say how the game would have turned out it if went the distance, however I think I had the advantage, outclassing him in the shooting and magic department and still having some of my combat units with a decent number of ranks. I was dictating the pace of the game and even if he called a Waaaaggh next turn he wouldn't have charged into any favourable match ups.

Round 5 vs All Goblins
An entirely goblin army. A very bad match up from his point of view. Shades ran into the middle of a lake in front of his army forcing some fanatics to pop out and kill themselves on the difficult terrain. My dark riders with BSB charged in against his giant and brought it down to two wounds, which was a bit unlucky because I almost killed it (rolled double 4s and needed 5+ for the riders). This did prove useful though because his general and BSB hopped into the same unit and went over to that corner of the table to deal with the threat my dark riders posed. This meant that the majority of his units were no longer benefiting from the general's leadership or the BSB's Red Raggedy Banner's re-roll failed panic checks. The next Lunzo turn saw shooting and magic create a chain of panic checks through the majority of his army, and remove the only credible combat threat of his trolls. I ended up killing everything except for his general, BSB and the unit they were in. A 17-3 win, but could have been more if I hadn't let him capture my army banner and had instead shot the giant for an extra turn or 2 first.

Round 6 vs Chaos Dwarfs
Same opponent that the sack played. I lost this one 0-20 as well. I think the army I had didn't have the necessary hard hitting units to deal with entire armies of well armoured T4 troops. Add to this the fact that my deployment zone had two forests in it, effectively dividing it into thirds which cut out line of sight to his flying terror causing nasty, so I couldn't bring my shooting to bear on it.

The above points meant I had an uphill battle, but I was outclassed and outmanoeuvred by a superior army, and much more experienced opponent. He was a great sport though so I didn't mind losing that badly.

GrubLord: This beats the hell out of Bog's "Yeah, I did alright. I guess. Fucking dryads.".

Lunzo: I should add that Matt Cole who played Chaos Dwarfs is ranked in the top 20 in Australia.

RJorb: Helluva post, Lunzo. I enjoyed it!

RJorb: Any photos, btw?

Lunzo: I took a couple but haven't gotten around to downloading them from my camera yet. Thanks for reminding me haha.

GrubLord: I'd like to see this pro-painted high elf army, m'self.

Lunzo: Unfortunately I didn't get a photo of that one. I only brought the camera on day 2 and only got it out for the painting contest. The pro high elves weren't on display for the painting comp because you were only allowed to enter it if you painted your army yourself.

Syfro: Yeah, I did alright. I guess. Fucking dryads.

Heh, in all seriousness, my games were a fairly varied bunch, although my investment in a Skink Screen of Death kind of came to naught since only one of my opponents had any semblance of a gunline, which was strange since I fought 4 elves. Also, I learned that my choice of Lord was pretty awful, since he spent most games just lounging around rather than hearing the lamentations of their women.

Round #1: Dark Elves... FIGHT!

My first opponent, who ended up getting placed 3rd Newcomer, had a fairly typical Dark Elf lineup: A manly gunline, some infantry, a bunch of chariots and a bit of fast cavalry to round it up. In the first turn, however, he did something which blew my mind: His gunline all moved forward. Crazy. Unfortunately for him, his magic phase - which should've been quite impressive - didn't amount to much, since a combinatin of average rolling on his part and some muscular skink defense on mine led to him getting very few spells off at all, despite many of his eggs being in that basket. His shooting phase wasn't that much better; his three bolt throwers spent much of the game trying to pincussion my Stegadon, but to very little avail. That beastie took about 10 bolts and was still dancin' enough to slam into his spears alongside my Saurus Cavalry, causing some serious damage. I didn't manage to control his chariots that well however, and they caused some casualties amongst my troops before my Kroxigor were able to bring them in line. All in all it was a fairly close game, although we had to end it around turn 5, and it ended in a minor loss for me, who took away 7 points.

Round #2: Wood Elves... FIGHT!

The next army could be called Wood Elves in the very loosest meaning of the term, since the whole damn thing was dryads, treekin, treemen, etc. Long story short, my maneuverability was severely limited by the fact that I had the awesome luck of getting a table covered in woods - which were then even MORE covered once he placed an additional one. Add to that the fact that skinks shooting at skirmishers in cover while at long range is a huge no-no, and a continuation of my awesome luck on Leadership checks which saw me fail literally FIVE charges due to stupidity or fear. Long story short, my army sat there quivering in their dope hats while the trees tore them to shreds. 0 points for me!

Round #3: High Elves... FIGHT!

This game was against Will Chivers, the same fellow that Lun went up against. I spent some time trying to shoot down that Dragon before I just lured it into a corner with my Stegadon and got it stuck behind trees, where it spent pretty much half the game. With said Dragon out of the picture, my Saurus Cav were free to finish off the already-poisoned High Elf infantry, and the stopping power of my Saurus Blocks was enough to keep him in place while he took his medicine. My first win, and a glorious 15 points to me!

Round #4: Chaos Mortals of Tzeench... FIGHT!

This match was over before it began. With a giant, two units of Ironguts, three chariots and a bunch of Chaos Knights, this army had more hitting power than I could ever hope to match with my patched-together army. Despite the fact that my saurus were set and ready to take them, there was no way in buggery they could survive, which was pretty much the story for my whole army. Another wonderous 0 points for me!

Round #5: Chaos Beasts of Nurgle... FIGHT!

"Another bunch of damned skirmishers in woods" was my first thought, but luckily for me these skirmishers were not the "tough as a saurus, with a 5+ ward save to boot" variety, but the "please shoot us Mr Skink, we do so love it" kind. However, my army in this case seemed to have been the Lizardman Walking Marathon team, who rolled abominably on all running and chasing rolls. The match started on a high note with my skinks dashing forward and unleashing 40 poisoned shots into the face of one unfortunate giant, who fell off the hill (unfortunately not onto his own troops). However, those skinks were quickly run off the board by various Chaosy beasties, and my Kroxigor who strategically withdrew got their powerwalk on and fled a whole 3 inches, getting summarily cut down. On the other side of the board, my cavalry fled from some flank charge action, decided that was a really good idea, and kept running all the way off the board. With my skinks holding off his small stuff, the center of the board became a showdown for my Saurus & Stegadon against all his minotaurs and trolls and their very large, very heavy weapons. Managing to get the charge against both units, I dealt them a great deal of hurt and caused them to flee! Unfortunately, all my troops stepped in rhythm, gettin' their powerwalk on, and failing to catch anything, least of all his very expensive and very dangerous general. Then he rallied, turned around, and smacked up what I had left. Luckily for me, my skinks had been engaged in fisticuffs with his Shaman for a fair while, and finally managed to shiv him one, leaving me walking away - slowly - with 5 points!

Round #6: High Elves... FIGHT!

Both myself and the High Elf player realised that the outcome of this match would not matter for anything, ever, so we spent it mainly screwing around and developing some interesting encounters, such as Shadow Warriors vs the Ninja SKinks of Doom, many many many skinks (and my completely USELESS giant bow) pumpin' shots into his Dragon, some awesome pitched infantry clashes, and of course the obligatory DRAGON VS STEGADON SHOWDOWN! However, despite the Dragon being down to one wound from all that shooting, my Stegadon decided it would rather snuggle than attack the dragon, and got its face bit off for its trouble. In the end, this game was pretty much a dead-even tie.

Although my performance was distinctly meh, I did learn a few things (like how skinks can still poison when they need 6s to hit), and it was plenty of fun. However, I don't know if I'd be up for the Sylvania tournament, as three days of straight Warhammer might be a bit much.

GrubLord: Huzzah for powerwalking lizards. tongue

Great summary, Bawgs. Iz full of ze funnies, ja?

Lunzo: teh_saq's army

Lunzo:

Winner of the people's choice for best looking army award.

P.S. Sorry Syfro, but I ran out of time before I could get over to your table and get a photo of your army.

RJorb: Thanks for the photos Lun, your army and Saq's are looking pretty intimidating!

Hmm... I like some of the elements of Glenn's army (the metal spheres, for example), but my first impression was "drab". tongue

GrubLord: Ooh - them's nice photos.
