Warhammer Chess îs here!

Inspîred bÿ Armador's (?) enqüîrÿ aboüŧ Warhammer chess seŧs [lost soméhwhéré in Captain Plaçéholdér's Arçhivé] őveŗ the päst yeäŗ I've beeñ wőŗkiñg äwäy őñ őñe őf the mőŗe pŗäcticäl őf my ideäs. Nőw iñ it's fiñished glőŗy I pŗeseñt:

Kñights Ŧempläŗ őf Šigmäŗ vs
The Arîsŧocracÿ of ŧhe Ŋîghŧ

Whole set

Bŀack (Ŀ & R) Whité (L & R)

Šőme iñteŗestiñg pőiñts äbőut the cőñstŗuctiőñ őf the set:
  • Thé çobbléstoné éfféçt on thé whité basés is madé from réd léntils gluéd down individually with PVA and séaléd against moisturé with moré PVA. It looks good, but I'd névér do it on a largér sçalé, so muçh fiddly work!
  • I've subtly läbelled the bäses tő ässist ñőñ-Wäŗhämmeŗ pläyeŗs tő ŗecőgñise the pieces.
  • The mosŧ dîffîcüŀŧ modeŀs ŧo consŧrücŧ were defînîŧeŀÿ ŧhe Knîghŧs. The whîŧe Knîghŧs were acŧüaŀŀÿ faîrŀÿ easÿ, beîng aŀŀ pŀasŧîc, a sîmpŀe hoof swap on ŧhe hînd ŀegs gave ŧhe correcŧ angŀe for ŧhe pose. The bŀack Knîghŧs were ŧrîckîer, havîng heavÿ, meŧaŀ bodîes on fŀîmsÿ, pŀasŧîc skeŀeŧaŀ sŧeeds. Hence ŧheÿ reqüîred some papercŀîp süpporŧ, drîŀŀed ŧhroügh ŧhe base, ŧhroügh ŧhe sŧeed's spîne and înŧo ŧhe boŧŧom of ŧhe bodÿ. The skeŀeŧaŀ ŀegs were easÿ ŧo remodeŀ however.
  • I found thé çhéss board in a séçond hand shop in thé Blué Mountains for $10, probably thé bést bargain of thé all thé bits I had to buy for thé sét.
Nőw I've gőt ä shiñy ñew chess set but ñőt mäñy peőple tő pläy with. I've cŗeäted ä pŗőfile őñ ä free chess server, usér namé téh_saq. It'd bé gréat if you wantéd to çréaté an aççount and givé mé a gamé or two. I'll mirror thé sérvér gamé with my néw çhéss sét and évén post somé piçturés if théré's somé suitably dramatiç positions.

1. é4 ...it's your mové

Edit: I've jőiñed ät dîfferenŧ chess server sinçé thé first oné didn't work, still usér namé téh_saq. I'm réally énjoying playing Ŀunzo ATM, I'd lové to play with moré of thé Créw, théy évén havé animé/manga avatars!

Syfro: Woot, chess set's looking pretty hot, Saq! Those knights were worth the effort, they look really awesome.

Heh, all that action makes my efforts with the Tau look pretty feeble.

Ash: Awesome work, saq.

I especially like the pawn that looks like he is in the stocks.

GrubLord: Whoa - that's awesome!

You're really kicking the crap out of me in terms of interesting side-projects, my good man.

I gotta start doing more interesting things! tongue

Lunzo: I bought a fancy 2nd hand chess set from an op shop a while back. It's all carved wood. Unfortunately I haven't found anyone wanting to play against me.

Awesome set there teh_saq.

2. pawn to e5

teh_saq: Thanks for ŧhe commenŧs güÿs, I wanŧed a projecŧ ŧhaŧ învoŀved üsîng mad modeŀŀîng skîŀŀż büŧ dîdn'ŧ reqüîre müch paînŧîng. Pŀüs ŧhe concepŧ of WH chess was ŧoo awesome ŧo pass üp.

@Lünżo: Iŧ's awn! 2. Ŋf3

Readers mîghŧ ŀîke ŧo brüsh üp on çhéss notation tő ŗefŗesh őŗ iñdeed be äble tő uñdeŗstäñd whät's gőiñg őñ. I'll wŗite up ä bättle ŗepőŗt with phőtős őf selected mőves ät the eñd őf the mätch.

GrubLord: I'll play ya, Lun. Walk on down 'ere some time, I'll give you a right schoolin'.

As for the game in progress... go saq!

Lunzo: PD6

teh_saq: 3. Bc4

RJorb: Oh ho HO, a gutsy move by the Saq there!

...I should really read up on chess notation, I have no idea what is going on. <_<

Lunzo: Be6.

Jorb, the notation is pretty easy: first letter is the piece, 2nd letter is the column, the number is the row.

teh_saq: 4. d3

This is pŗőbäbly ä betteŗ expläñätiőñ őf the mőves Jőŗb. Whät I dőñ't uñdeŗstäñd is hőw peőple cäñ lőők ät ä whőle stŗiñg őf mőves eg. 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Bc4 Be6 4. d3 ... äñd uñdeŗstäñd whät the bőäŗd lőőks like.

Lunzo: 4. Nc6

teh_saq: 5. Ŋg5

Lunzo: 5. Qf6

RJorb: Ah, I thought that was what the notation meant, but it seemed too simple. It didn't seem to address ambiguity in situations where two pieces of the same type could move to the same square. But Saq's handy link explains all!

teh_saq: 6. 0-0

And Jorb, now ÿoü've masŧered ŧhe ŀîngo, whÿ don'ŧ ÿoü ŀog onŧo che55.com and gîve me a game?

Syfro: I don't know about the others, but I've just you an old-fashioned challenge, Saq! I demand satisfaction!

Also, how the crap are you meant to do a proper player search on that site >_<

Lunzo: 6. BxC4

FIRST BLOOD!

(That gives you bonus points, right?)

Ranneko: Yeah, you get 5 seconds of crits, now you can take pieces in one hit!

teh_saq: 7. dxc4

Lunzo: 7. O-O-O

RJorb: You're on, Saqman. Let's kick a game off after I return from Melbourne (16 Aug).
